Meetings of high school students

From March 22nd to 24th, 2019, students and teachers from the XIV Belgrade Gymnasium, the GSO Gymnasium Katerina Kantakuzina Branković from Zagreb, and the Svetozar Marković Gymnasium, which educates students from the Hungarian community in Novi Sad, had the unique opportunity to take part in the continuation of the project “In Search of Shared Heritage.” This project was designed to connect students from the region while highlighting the importance of fostering values such as tolerance and interculturalism.

The Serbian high school students from Zagreb arrived in Belgrade on a Friday afternoon. After a warm welcome at the XIV Belgrade Gymnasium, they embarked on a guided tour of the city, before being hosted by their local student peers for the evening.

On Saturday, students from Novi Sad joined the group. Workshop activities resumed with a task to create biographical cards about four prominent human rights activists. Members of the debate club, alongside an active audience, engaged in a lively discussion on whether society, beyond the classroom, is capable of adequately educating students for responsible participation in a democratic society.

The workshops and educational sessions were designed to build students' awareness of the need to respect human rights and foster better understanding and tolerance towards members of national minorities. In the afternoon, the students were guided through the rich artistic heritage of the National Museum by a professional guide, who introduced them to its invaluable collection. In the evening, they had the chance to enjoy a theater performance at Akademija 28.
